Funding
The society is proud to support a range of activities in applied philosophy. Our funding schemes are listed below; click the More Information link for further details of each scheme.
General Funding Scheme Notes
- You must be a member of the Society to apply for event or further funding – see here for information about joining.
- The subject matter must fall within the area of applied philosophy. It need not be purely academic – for example, it may involve relevant practitioners, policy makers, and other non-academic parties.
- There are deadlines to apply for event funding, doctoral scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships – see details on the relevant pages. Applications for research trip support, teaching relief and further support may be submitted at any time.
- Successful applicants should submit a report after the event/activity, and funds will then be paid (excepting doctoral scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships which are paid in full at the time of award.).
The Society and the Journal also award a range of prizes — these are listed along with previous award winners.

Events
The SAP makes awards of up to £3000 to support any workshop, conference, colloquium or event which meets the conditions below. Up to £6000 can be awarded in exceptional cases. Doctoral Scholarships
Each year the Society for Applied Philosophy offers two scholarships for doctoral work in applied philosophy in a UK university, and one further scholarship for doctoral work in applied philosophy in any University in an EU country (including EEA and EFTA countries -- subject to a suitable candidate coming forward). The level of each scholarship will be up to £10,000 and will be held for one year.
Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Society’s Post-Doctoral Fellowship Scheme is for researchers in applied philosophy who are within two years of receiving their PhD. The one-year fellowship, worth £16,000, will be awarded each year to support post-doctoral research to be undertaken at a university in any country.
Research Trip Support
The Society offers financial assistance to enable those working in applied philosophy to pursue their research away from their home institution. This includes, for example, attendance at conferences and workshop, longer research visits to another institution, and participation in summer schools.
Teaching Relief
The Society offers funding for limited teaching relief to support the completion of a research project (e.g. a monograph or journal article, grant application). This relief might, for example, enable a researcher to pay for a graduate teaching assistant to assist with seminars and marking. This scheme is open to academic staff (i.e. those appointed as
either temporary or permanent lecturers on a full-time basis).
Further Support
The Society will also consider applications for other forms of research support not covered by the above schemes. Past examples of successful applications include paying for indexing work and other publishing subventions, survey work to inform applied philosophical research, and the compilation of a diversity reading list. This scheme is open to post-graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, academic staff and independent researchers.
Join the Society
Membership of the Society is open to anyone interested in our aims, whether or not you hold a philosophical qualification or are employed as a professional philosopher.
Membership currently costs £26 per annum, or £14 for postgraduates. This includes online access to the Journal of Applied Philosophy, as well as a reduced fee for the Society’s annual conference. Members can also apply for event funding through the Society’s grant scheme.
